Love Them Tender
They’re hot. They’re talented. They’re single (well, most of them). Atlanta’s first and only female Elvis Presley tribute band, Pelvis Breastlies (you love the name, right?), sat down with Date Night to talk about groupies, turn-ons and turn-offs, and dream guys. Spoiler alert: not one of them said Elvis.
Meet the band:
Cherri Swan: Bass guitar
Katy “Keys” Keene: Keyboard
Elizabeth Hiott: Drums
Erin Watson: Lead vocals (midday radio personality on Rock 100.5)
Shawn Williams: Guitar, band founder (midday radio personality on 99X)
DN: So, I asked the group of dudes we interviewed for Date Night this question, and I have to ask you ladies. What is the Atlanta dating scene like as a girl?
[All groan with emphatic variations of “it sucks”]
DN: Not good?
Erin: It sucks for girls. All the guys I’m attracted to happen to have rings on their fingers. [Laughs]
DN: What do you look for in a guy?
Katy: Tattoos.
Cherri: That he has a job.
[All laugh and agree]
DN: Do you feel like you have creepers being in a band?
Shawn: We’d probably have creepers without being in a band. [Laughs] But, seriously, if they come out to every show, I guess that could be a little creepy.
Erin: We play for everybody, though. Especially for those of us in radio, we can’t discriminate against, say, a guy who sits around and plays with his action figures all day. [Girls laugh]. We have to include everybody – the “creepers” and the cool guys.
DN: Does being in a band affect your dating life?
Cherri: It can be hard. We’re busy and have our own lives outside the band, too. It’s hard to stick a relationship in there, make time for it.
Erin: I’m looking for a guy that’s into music and into rock ‘n’ roll, too. Or even if he’s not in music, he needs to be on the same playing field where he understands….
Shawn: ...that we need to be at practice. That I can’t go out tonight or even meet up after [some nights].
DN: Do you feel like people think you’re wild and crazy since you’re in a rock band?
Katy: Yeah, but it’s true – doesn’t bother me too much.
DN: What about jealousy issues?
Shawn: Well, you need someone that is flexible with your schedule and you’re able to bring out to events and he can hold his own while you’re talking to the audience.
Elizabeth: It’s a lot of understanding on your partner’s part and him realizing that this is our job. We’ll have people on our fan page saying things and your partner needs to understand that’s just part of what fans do.
DN: Where do you meet guys?
All: Bars. Shows.
DN: Is it hard to meet guys?
Elizabeth: Part of what we do is dressing up, wearing corsets, etc. So it’s sometimes a challenge for men to both see us seriously as musicians and not just see us as eye candy.
DN: And, then do they expect “the fantasy” all the time?
Erin: I think a lot of guys would rather it be real. They like you to dress up and look hot, but also like you in your big flannel shirt
DN: What is everyone’s dream guy?
Cherri: Someone who has a passion for music. I like drummers.
Erin: I think Chris Cornell is hot. He gets it, and is talented.
Shawn: Definitely a musician because they’re more free spirited and are usually well cultured, too.
DN: What about your dream date?
Cherri: One of my best dates was at Six Flags – kinda corny, but fun.
Shawn: Just walking around Atlanta. There’s so much to see and so many places to go and people to watch.
Erin: Just a mystery ride. Hop on the bike (note: she’s talking about a motorcycle, not a ten speed), take off and just see the scenery and feel the wind on your face, even go to Chattanooga for the day or something.
Elizabeth: My best date was 14 to 15 hours long. It started Saturday night and ended Sunday afternoon. We watched old Cary Grant movies, fell asleep talking; no clothes were taken off. It started off as a group date with friends and by the time the friends left us, they were saying it looked like we had always been together.
DN: Turn offs?
Shawn: Someone who’s not intelligent.
Katy: Someone who doesn’t have manners.
Erin: I don’t want to feel manlier than a guy. I once dated a guy that cried more than I did.
Elizabeth: Guys that complain about everything
Cherri: Guys without jobs.
DN: Are you all the kinds of girls that know right off the bat if the chemistry is there?
All: YES!
Erin: I don’t want someone to have to grow on me. I want to have that initial connection from the start.
Katy: Right from the start, I want it to be hot, fiery. I don’t want to have boring conversation.
Cherry: Actually, I did date a guy once that was really funny and sweet and it wasn’t really there at first, but he did grow on me and we ended up dating for a year.
DN: Has anyone had a crazy horrible date they want to share?
Elizabeth: I have one. I call him “17 dollar man”. He took me to Great Wraps at the mall and we split a meal. I think it was a Philly Steak wrap and he gave me the end that had all the bread. He didn’t ask me what I wanted to drink, but just ordered me a Diet Coke. When he dropped me off, he didn’t even stop the car. He barely stopped enough for me to get my purse and get out.
[All laugh]
DN: I think we’ll end it there. Or rather, that’s a wrap. Pun intended.
The Pelvis Breastlies love puns.
