Get Summer Fit at FlyWheel Sports Atlanta
The newest studio to hit Atlanta’s burgeoning fitness scene is FlyWheel Sports located on West Paces Ferry Road next to The St. Regis. Offerings include FlyWheel stadium cycling and FlyBarre body sculpting classes.
Reserving your space in advance may be FlyWheel Sports’ best perk. Cyclists choose a bike; FlyBarre members choose a mat. This eliminates the need to arrive an inordinate amount of time early and you never worry classes will be overcrowded or overbooked. FlyWheel classes are limited to 48 riders and FlyBarre has 21 spots.
Additional incentives include towels, water, code-lock lockers (you choose a 4-digit code – no need to bring your own lock) and showers.
FlyWheel
The amphitheater-style cycling room is curved and tiered, so everyone can see the instructor and there is ample room between bikes. Classes are 45 or 60 minutes long.
Individual bikes have digital displays that monitor RPM, resistance, and current and overall power. The statistics for every class you take are recorded online, allowing you to track performance over time.
FlyWheel classes feature a TorqBoard in the form of giant flatscreens (one for women; one for men) that display members’ performance data and rankings in the class. You elect whether or not to have your stats displayed. Opt-in through your online account and choose a display name.
Cyclists must wear bike shoes, but no need to worry, Flywheel provides them at no extra cost. Simply select the option for shoes on your online profile and a pair in your size will be waiting in a cubby corresponding with your pre-selected bike number.
Bonus: each class includes an arm workout. For one song, riders cycle and work their arms with weighted bars.
Double Bonus: Burn 600+ calories in a 45 minute class or more than 1000 calories in 60 minutes. You will leave class drenched in sweat, feeling fantastic.
FlyBarre
Designed to tone, sculpt and lengthen your body, FlyBarre incorporates elements of yoga, dance and Pilates into a challenging 60-minute routine. Even if you lift heavy weights at the gym and consider yourself strong, your arms, legs and abs will be exhausted at the end of class, which is exactly the point.
FlyBarre classes focus on thighs, butt and abs, well-known problem areas, concentrating nearly 15 minutes on each. Plenty of time is spent working the upper body with dynamic move
ments using light weights, and each class includes a warm-up, a full stretch at the halfway mark and another stretch at the end.
The classes are low-impact, featuring nearly constant pulsing. Whether you’re on your first, fifth or tenth class, you’ll yearn for the final four counts signaling the pulse is over. Then, you’re on to tone the next body party with a round of pulses.
FlyBarre strengthens your core so that the pulsing becomes more manageable; however, every class is challenging no matter your fitness level.
